Dialysis delivered for remote need
A new dialysis unit is enhancing treatment access for First Nations in one of the most remote parts of Australia.
Proponents say that the launch of a renal dialysis clinic in Coober Pedy marks a significant step in improving healthcare access for First Nations Australians suffering from severe kidney disease.
The clinic, part of the Albanese Labor Government’s $73.2 million Better Renal Services for First Nations Peoples initiative, is designed to provide essential, lifesaving treatment to a vulnerable population disproportionately affected by chronic kidney disease.
First Nations adults are twice as likely as non-Indigenous Australians to suffer from chronic kidney disease and are nearly four times more likely to die from it.
For those with end-stage kidney disease, dialysis is a critical treatment option, aside from kidney transplants.
Access to local dialysis services is crucial, as it increases the likelihood of patients receiving regular treatment while remaining in their communities, connected to their culture and support systems.
The Coober Pedy clinic will initially serve approximately eight patients per week, with the capacity to expand to 16 patients during periods of high demand.
The clinic aims to make treatment more accessible, reducing the need for patients to travel vast distances, which often results in decreased treatment adherence and loss of cultural and familial connections.
The Western Desert Nganampa Walytja Palyantjaku Tjutaku Aboriginal Corporation, known as Purple House, will deliver the services at the new clinic.
The government scheme will support up to 30 dialysis units across South Australia, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory, including necessary workforce accommodations.
Central Australia faces a severe diabetes and kidney disease epidemic, with one per cent of the population on dialysis, one of the highest rates nationwide.
Health experts say preventive measures are needed alongside treatment services to combat the underlying causes of these conditions.
