The Federal and Queensland State Governments have announced a $5.9 million funding package to build palliative care services at Redlands Hospital.

The funding will aim to deliver improved care for increased numbers of palliative care patients.

Australian Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, welcomed the announcement.

“Giving hospitals the resources they need for more beds and better care is a priority of national health reform,” Ms Roxon said.

“Palliative care offers a holistic, caring approach, and provides physical, emotional, social and spiritual support to patients living with a terminal illness, and their families.”

Council on the Ageing Queensland Chief Executive Mark Tucker-Evans welcomed the announcement of new palliative care services in Redlands.

"Palliative care is one of the most important aspects of Queensland's public health system. Getting it right is critical and we welcome any expansion of these services in public hospitals, in aged care facilities and in the community."
