Prison drugs probed
Medical regulator AHPRA is investigating allegations of improper prescription of opioid replacement drugs at Fulham Correctional Centre in Victoria.
It is alleged that a staff member at the prison, operated by GEO Group Australia, prescribed drugs like methadone without the necessary qualifications over several months last year.
A former subcontracted worker at the prison reported the issue to AHPRA after first raising concerns within the company, expressing disappointment in the justice system's handling of the situation. Another person who worked at the prison in 2022 also shared similar concerns.
GEO Group Australia has stated that it takes all allegations seriously and conducted its own investigation, subsequently referring the matter to AHPRA and informing Corrections Victoria and Justice Health.
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency confirmed that it is engaged with the prison management to determine if any regulatory actions are required.
This investigation occurs as GEO Group Australia prepares to take over healthcare delivery in most of Victoria's male prisons.
The allegations underscore the importance of proper oversight in prison drug addiction treatment programs, as poorly managed prescribing can lead to severe consequences, including death.
The Victorian government recently announced changes to the healthcare system in prisons, with GEO Group Australia assuming responsibility for male prisons and local public health providers handling female prisoner care.
