Privacy raised in triple-0 push
The NSW Government is considering high-tech triple-0 service upgrades, but there are privacy concerns already.
New South Wales police are looking for ways to incorporate new technology in emergency dispatch systems.
It could see upgrades that allow people to text 000, provide advanced geo-tagging and mapping services, or even live-stream from the scene of an accident.
News Corp reports say police are asking businesses to find “creative, innovative and future-driven” solutions to make sure the dispatch system “keeps pace with community expectations”.
NSW Police wants to find “significant performance improvements and operational benefits”, empowering users to employ “imagery, analytics, social media, SMS” and geographical mapping.
One in five people mistakenly believe they can already text 000.
While the technology may save lives, civil libertarians say it could lead to a serious invasion of privacy.
“If geolocations are uploaded, if video is uploaded of other people, facial recognition technology will be able to recognise people potentially,” said Stephen Blanks, the president of the New South Wales Council for Civil Liberties.
“There's a whole lot of information that could be collected inadvertently or deliberately.
“The process ought to be transparent, that ought to be publicly released, so the public can have confidence that their information is going to be used appropriately.”
