SA announces new plan for treating eating disorders
The South Australian Government has revealed its comprehensive new plan for treatment of people with eating disorders for public consultation.
State Health Minister, Jack Snelling, said the Government was now seeking feedback on the new model, with people able to provide their two cents through the SA Health website or by attending information sessions.
“The new model of care has been developed after significant work with clinicians and specialists in this area,” Mr Snelling said.
“Following a review of our existing services in 2011 there were some areas identified where improvements could be made.
“The key recommendation was that there need to be a range of services accessible to people across the state.
“The new model of care will be used to establish a state-wide specialist eating disorder service to provide assessment, treatment options and support to a range of hospital and community-based services.”
The new model of care recommends:
- Establishment of a specialist eating disorder team
- Development of a day program service
- Development of an appropriate bed based service
- Aligning care within medical inpatient services across hospital networks
- Development of a workforce strategy to ensure there is an appropriate level of trained and skilled clinicians
