Testosterone Against Dementia
New research from Monash University is showing that testosterone could combat dementia in women. It opens new avenues of research into memory and aging, and elder care as well.
Monash University’s Professor Susan Davis presented the research at The Endocrine Society’s 95th Annual Meeting and Expo now wrapping up in San Francisco.
She says 96 postmenopausal women recruited from the community were divided into two groups. One was to receive a testosterone gel and the other a visually identical placebo gel to be applied to the skin.
All women performed in the normal range for their age at the beginning of the trial. But after just 26 weeks, there was a statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in verbal learning and memory amongst the women using the testosterone gel.
