TGA reviews One Nation drug claims
The medical regulator is investigating claims made by One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is reportedly looking into a Facebook post on Senator Robert’s page that encouraged the prescription of ivermectin.
The drug ivermectin is frequently promoted by anti-vaccine groups as an alternative to vaccination, despite the drug not being designed, proven or approved for this use.
Senator Roberts’ post directed Facebook users to the services of Dr Mark Hobart; an anti-vaccine doctor.
The Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 makes it illegal to advertise prescription-only medication without the TGA’s permission, and carries penalties ranging from a fine to criminal charges.
“We’ve had requests from people for locating a doctor who prescribes ivermectin. Dr Mark Hobart in Melbourne does,” Senator Roberts’ post said.
The authorities are reviewing the post.
“The TGA is assessing the social media posts and will take action where there has been a breach of the advertising rules. We note that the Facebook post has been removed,” the regulator said.
