About the team
The Communications, Fundraising and Advocacy team plays a vital role in shaping and sharing our organisation's story. We don’t just explain the science – we share the story of the people who perform research, and the people living with vision loss who inspire our work every day. With a focus on impactful storytelling, the team develops and delivers creative, multi-channel communication strategies to enhance engagement with key audiences, including donors, stakeholders, and the broader community. Collaborating closely with various teams, the team ensures consistent messaging across digital platforms, social media, publications, and events. By combining innovative approaches with data-driven insights, the team drives brand awareness, supports fundraising initiatives, and fosters meaningful connections that amplify our mission and impact.
The role
The Fundraising Campaigns Specialist is responsible for creating and delivering compelling direct marketing content and supporter communications across multiple channels. This hands-on, creative role is responsible for:
- End-to-end implementation of CERA’s fundraising appeals, including writing and coordinating the design of direct mail campaigns, plus the implementation of digital campaigns
- Working closely with internal teams and external providers, to ensure seamless campaign execution to acquire, retain, and engage supporters
- Monitoring campaign performance, generate insightful reports, and identify areas for improvement to enhance future fundraising activities
- Overseeing the creation of Visionary, CERA’s biannual supporter magazine, from content curation to working with external designers
- Managing the production of biannual consumer EDMs
- Representing CERA at fundraising events and public engagements to strengthen relationships with donors.
Your skills and experience
- Tertiary qualification in marketing or a related field, or equivalent experience in a similar role
- Strong understanding of fundraising strategies and methods across multiple channels, with a focus on leveraging technology to engage and retain donors
- Proven hands-on experience in designing and executing fundraising campaigns across various platforms including direct mail, paid digital, and organic digital media
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences, maintaining professionalism, confidence, and discretion when handling sensitive information
- Highly organised with exceptional time management skills, capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously and meeting deadlines
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with an eye for detail and the ability to create compelling narratives to drive donor engagement
- Experience with electronic direct mail platforms (e.g., Campaign Monitor) and content management systems (e.g., WordPress)
- A commitment to working collaboratively with others and fostering a supportive team environment.

We are an independent Medical Research Institute closely affiliated with the University of Melbourne within the discipline of ophthalmology in the Department of Surgery, Melbourne Medical School.
