Women's Sexual Health Promotion Officer

 

Nindilingarri Cultural Health Services (NCHS) is committed to delivering a range of holistic and culturally appropriate health services to the Indigenous population of the Fitzroy Valley, amongst whom traditional law, language and cultural practices remain strong. Located in the remote heart of the Kimberley region of Western Australia, 400km from Broome, 260km from Derby and 290km from Halls Creek, we service 45 Indigenous communities scattered over an area of approximately 300km.

KEY OBJECTIVE: To work collaboratively with the Nindilingarri Health Promotion team to provide an effective and culturally acceptable sexual health program, to increase health literacy and to encourage positive and respectful relationships amongst the residents of the Fitzroy Valley.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Contribute to, promote and adhere to the philosophy of NCHS;

  • Demonstrate and role model respectful relationships with elders, leaders, community members, parents and youth;
  • Improve the sexual health literacy of Aboriginal young people and encourage positive and respectful relationships through the delivery of a culturally sensitive, holistic, education program;
  • Work collaboratively with NCHS Health Promotion Team and partner organisations including WACHS and KPHU;
  • Produce and promote culturally sensitive resources for program delivery;
  • Visit outlying communities to deliver programs and conduct assessments;
  • Ensure program objectives are achieved and provide timely and accurate reporting within scheduled timeframes;
  • Foster local capacity building through identifying, training and supervising potential community sexual health workers;
  • Act in a manner which is responsive to the shared and individual cultural needs of the people living in the Fitzroy Valley;
  • Support accreditation processes and continuous quality improvement including program evaluation and consumer satisfaction.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Tertiary qualifications in health promotion, education or community development or an appropriate health/education related field;
  • Understanding and experience of remote living, in Aboriginal communities;
  • Willingness to follow advice and guidance from elders and leaders, for delivering culturally responsive sexual health education programs;
  • Understanding and commitment to the philosophy and aims of Public Health, Health Promotion and Community Development;
  • Experience in health promotion or education program planning, implementation and evaluation;
  • Evidence of well developed interpersonal skills and harmonious work relationships;
  • High quality verbal and written communication skills, including report writing;
  • Demonstrated ability to utilise effective problem solving strategies;
  • Satisfactory Police and Working With Children Clearances or willingness to obtain;
  • Current driver's licence;
